How to use this tool?
This calculator determines the number of steps, exact riser height, and total run for a staircase. All measurements are in inches (imperial).
- Enter Total Rise (required): The vertical height from the top of the finished floor below to the top of the finished floor above.
- Provide either:
- Desired Riser Height (optional): Your preferred step height (typically 4–7.5 inches). The calculator will round the number of steps and adjust the riser height exactly.
- Number of Steps (optional): If you know the step count, enter it. The calculator will compute the exact riser height.
- Enter Tread Depth (required): The horizontal depth of each step (e.g., 10 inches).
- Click Calculate. The result shows:
- Number of steps
- Exact riser height (inches)
- Tread depth (inches)
- Total run (steps × tread depth)
Note: If the riser height falls outside 4–7.5 inches, a warning appears. Ensure all inputs are positive numbers.
