How to Use the Grade Curve Calculator
- Enter Raw Scores – In the Raw Scores field, type or paste scores separated by commas or spaces (e.g.,
78, 85, 92). - Choose Curve Type – Select either:
- Linear Adjustment – Shifts all scores by a constant to match a target mean.
- Bell Curve (Normalization) – Rescales scores to a target mean and standard deviation.
- Set Target Parameters – Enter a Target Mean (e.g., 75). For bell curve, also set a Target Std Dev (must be positive, e.g., 10).
- Calculate – Click the Calculate Curved Grades button. Results show original mean/std dev, curve method details, and a table of raw vs. curved scores.
Note: All scores are treated as numbers. Ensure no empty fields or invalid entries to avoid errors.

A grade curve adjusts raw scores to achieve a desired distribution, often to compensate for a difficult exam or to standardize grades across different sections.
Linear adjustment adds or subtracts a constant to each score so that the new mean equals the target mean. The spread remains unchanged.
Bell curve normalization transforms scores so that the new mean and standard deviation match the target values, preserving the relative order of scores.
If all raw scores are identical, the standard deviation is zero. For bell curve normalization, all curved scores will be set to the target mean.
