How to Use the Roofing Material Calculator
This calculator estimates the total roof area, number of squares, and shingle bundles needed for a roof using 3-tab shingles. All measurements are in feet (imperial).
- Enter Roof Length – Input the length of the roof in feet (e.g., 40).
- Enter Roof Width – Input the width of the roof in feet (e.g., 30).
- Select Roof Pitch – Choose the roof pitch from the dropdown (e.g., 6/12 for medium slope). The pitch factor adjusts the area for slope.
- Set Waste Factor – Enter a percentage for material waste (default 10%). This accounts for cuts and errors.
- Click "Calculate Materials" – The results will show:
- Total Roof Area (sq ft) – includes pitch and waste.
- Squares Needed – 1 square = 100 sq ft.
- Shingle Bundles – for 3-tab shingles (3 bundles per square).
Tip: Ensure all inputs are positive numbers. The calculator uses the formula: Area = (Length × Width) × Pitch Factor, where Pitch Factor = √((pitch/12)² + 1).

Frequently Asked Questions
Roof area is calculated by multiplying the length by width, then by a pitch factor. The pitch factor accounts for the slope and is derived from the roof pitch (rise/12).
A 'square' is a roofing term for 100 square feet of roof area. It is the standard unit for ordering materials.
Typically, three bundles of standard 3-tab shingles cover one square. However, this may vary by shingle type; always check manufacturer specifications.
