How to use this tool?
This calculator computes the Horizontal, Vertical, and Diagonal Field of View (FOV) for a camera system. All inputs must be in millimeters (mm).
- Enter Sensor Width (mm) – e.g., 36 for full-frame.
- Enter Sensor Height (mm) – e.g., 24 for full-frame.
- Enter Focal Length (mm) – e.g., 50 for a standard lens.
- Click "Calculate FOV" – the results appear below.
Results: The three FOV angles (in degrees) are displayed. The formula used is:
FOV = 2 × arctan( sensor dimension / (2 × focal length) )
Note: All values must be positive numbers. If you enter zero or leave a field blank, an error will appear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Field of view (FOV) is the extent of the observable scene captured by a camera lens. It is typically measured in degrees and depends on sensor size and focal length.
Sensor sizes are often listed in camera specifications. Common sizes: Full-frame (36x24 mm), APS-C (approx. 22.2x14.8 mm for Canon), Micro Four Thirds (17.3x13 mm).
Diagonal FOV is often quoted by lens manufacturers because it gives a single number representing the lens's coverage across the entire sensor area.
