Frequently Asked Questions

The Child Pugh score is a clinical tool used to assess the severity of liver disease, particularly cirrhosis, and predict prognosis. It uses five clinical measures: total bilirubin, serum albumin, INR, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy.

Each of the five parameters is scored from 1 to 3 points, with 1 being the least abnormal and 3 being the most abnormal. The total score ranges from 5 to 15, and patients are classified into Class A (5-6), B (7-9), or C (10-15).

Class A indicates well-compensated liver disease with good hepatic function. Class B indicates significant functional compromise. Class C indicates decompensated liver disease with poor prognosis. Higher classes are associated with increased surgical risk and shorter survival.
