How to Use the Vinyl Siding Calculator
- Enter Wall Dimensions – Input the wall length and height in feet (e.g., 40 ft x 10 ft). These are required.
- Add Openings – Enter the number of windows and doors. Each window subtracts 15 sq ft, each door subtracts 20 sq ft.
- Set Waste Factor – Adjust the waste percentage (default 10%) to account for cuts and errors. Must be between 0 and 50.
- Choose Siding Width – Enter the siding panel width in inches (e.g., 8 in). This converts the area to linear feet.
- Calculate – Click the Calculate button. Results show the estimated siding needed in square feet, plus a detailed breakdown.
Important Notes:
- All measurements are in imperial units (feet and inches).
- Ensure wall area is larger than total openings area, or you’ll see an error.
- Result is displayed as square feet of siding (linear feet of panels).

Frequently Asked Questions
First, the total wall area is computed by multiplying length by height. Then, the area of windows (15 sq ft each) and doors (20 sq ft each) is subtracted. A waste factor (default 10%) is added, and the result is converted to linear feet based on the siding width.
A waste factor of 10% is common for simple walls, but can be higher (15-20%) for complex roofs or many cutouts.
