How to Use the Towing Calculator
This calculator determines if your vehicle can safely tow a trailer based on weight limits. All values must be in pounds (lbs).
- Enter your vehicle’s GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – the maximum weight of your fully loaded vehicle.
- Enter the Curb Weight – your vehicle’s weight without passengers or cargo.
- Enter the Trailer Weight – the total weight of the trailer when loaded.
- Enter the Tongue Weight – the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch.
- Enter the Payload – weight of passengers and cargo inside the vehicle.
- Enter the Vehicle Tow Rating – the manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity.
- Click Calculate Towing Capacity.
Results: A green “Safe to tow!” message means your total tow weight (trailer + payload) is within the safe limit. A red warning means you exceed capacity and must reduce load. The formula shows how the safe capacity is calculated and checks if tongue weight is 10–15% of trailer weight (ideal range).

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, the maximum total weight a vehicle can safely carry including its own weight plus passengers, cargo, and tongue weight.
Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. It should typically be 10-15% of the trailer weight for safe towing.
Your safe towing capacity is limited by both your vehicle's tow rating and the GVWR minus curb weight. If your payload is high, the GVWR calculation may be the limiting factor.
