How to Use the Superheat Calculator

This calculator determines the superheat of an HVAC system by comparing the suction line temperature to the saturation temperature of the refrigerant at the measured pressure. Follow these steps:

  1. Select Refrigerant: Choose the refrigerant type (e.g., R410A, R22) from the dropdown.
  2. Enter Suction Pressure: Input the pressure reading from the suction service valve in psig (or psi).
  3. Enter Suction Line Temperature: Input the temperature measured near the service valve in °F.
  4. Choose Pressure Unit: Select psig (gauge) or psi (absolute). If using psi, the calculator automatically subtracts 14.7 to convert to psig.
  5. Click "Calculate Superheat": The result displays the superheat in °F, along with a formula breakdown showing the saturation temperature and calculation.

Note: All inputs must be positive numbers. The pressure must be within the refrigerant’s saturation table range (0–200 psig). The result is the difference between the actual line temperature and the saturation temperature at that pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Superheat is the temperature increase of a refrigerant vapor above its saturation temperature at a given pressure. It is a critical measurement in HVAC systems to ensure proper operation and efficiency.

Proper superheat ensures that the refrigerant is fully vaporized before entering the compressor, preventing liquid slugging and damage. It also helps optimize system performance and energy efficiency.

Suction pressure is typically measured at the suction service valve using a manifold gauge. Suction line temperature is measured with a thermometer probe placed on the suction line near the service valve.
