How to Use the Slope Calculator
- Enter the Rise – Type the vertical distance (e.g., 5). Any positive number is accepted; units (meters, feet, etc.) are consistent but not required.
- Enter the Run – Type the horizontal distance (e.g., 12). Must also be a positive number. The run cannot be zero.
- Click "Calculate" – The button will compute and display three results:
- Slope (%) = (Rise ÷ Run) × 100
- Angle (°) = arctan(Rise ÷ Run) in degrees
- Length = √(Rise² + Run²)
- Check for errors – If you enter invalid or non-positive numbers, the fields will highlight in red. Fix the input and recalculate.
Tip: Use the same unit for both Rise and Run (e.g., both in meters or both in inches) to get correct results.

Frequently Asked Questions
It calculates the slope (gradient), angle, and length of a line or ramp given the vertical rise and horizontal run. Commonly used in construction, landscaping, and accessibility.
Slope (%) = (Rise / Run) × 100. The angle is the arctangent of rise over run. Length is the hypotenuse using the Pythagorean theorem.
Any consistent units (e.g., feet, meters). The result is unitless for slope and angle, but length is in the same unit as inputs.
