How to Use the Shingle Calculator
This calculator estimates the number of shingle bundles needed for a rectangular roof. All measurements are in feet (imperial).
- Enter Roof Length (ft) – e.g., 40
- Enter Roof Width (ft) – e.g., 30
- Set Waste Factor (%) – typical range 5–15% (default 10%)
- Select Shingle Type:
- 3-Tab: 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft)
- Architectural: 4 bundles per square
- Premium: 5 bundles per square
- Click Calculate – the result shows total bundles needed, plus a breakdown of area, waste, squares, and bundles.
Note: All inputs must be positive numbers. The result is rounded up to the nearest whole bundle.

A bundle of 3-tab shingles typically covers 33.3 sq ft, while architectural shingles cover 25 sq ft per bundle. Premium shingles cover 20 sq ft per bundle. Our calculator uses bundles per square (100 sq ft) to simplify.
Waste factor accounts for cut-offs, damaged shingles, and mistakes during installation. Typically 5-15% is added to the total area.
