How to Use the Firewood Calculator

This calculator estimates the number of cords of firewood needed to heat a home for one season. All inputs are in Imperial units (square feet, percentage).

  1. Enter Heated Area – The total square footage you plan to heat (e.g., 1500).
  2. Select Climate Zone – Choose your region’s severity (Mild to Severe).
  3. Select Wood Type – Hardwood burns longer; Softwood requires more volume.
  4. Enter Stove Efficiency – A percentage (1–100) representing your stove’s efficiency.
  5. Click “Calculate Firewood” – The result shows:
    • Cords – Estimated cords (rounded to 2 decimals).
    • Full Cords – Rounded up to the nearest whole cord for practical ordering.

Formula: Area × Climate Factor × Wood Factor ÷ (Efficiency ÷ 100) ÷ 128 cu ft per cord.
