How to use this tool?
This calculator simplifies radicals and performs arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) on them.
How to Use
- Enter the Radicand – Type the number under the radical sign (e.g., 72). Must be a non-negative integer.
- Choose an Operation – Select from: Simplify, Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide.
- If not Simplify – A second radicand field appears. Enter the second number (also non-negative integer).
- Click Calculate – The result and step-by-step explanation appear below.
Important Notes
- For Add/Subtract, both radicals must simplify to the same radicand (e.g., √8 and √18 both simplify to 2√2 and 3√2).
- For Divide, the radicand division must result in an integer (e.g., √8 ÷ √2 = √4 = 2).
- Negative radicands are not allowed.
- Results are shown as coefficient√radicand (e.g., 6√2). If the radicand becomes 1, only the coefficient is shown.

Frequently Asked Questions
A radical calculator simplifies square roots and performs arithmetic operations on radicals, showing step-by-step solutions.
No, addition and subtraction require the radicands to be the same after simplification.
It finds the largest perfect square factor of the radicand, takes its square root, and writes it as a coefficient multiplied by the square root of the remaining factor.
