A radical expression is an expression that contains a root, such as a square root, cube root, or higher roots. It consists of a radicand (the number under the root) and an index (the root degree).

To simplify a radical, factor the radicand into perfect powers of the index, then move those factors outside the root. For example, √8 simplifies to 2√2 because 8 = 4 * 2 and √4 = 2.

Only like radicals (same index and same radicand) can be added or subtracted. If the radicands are different after simplification, they cannot be combined.
