How to use this tool?
This calculator helps you determine the fabric needed for quilt binding. All measurements must be in inches.
- Enter Quilt Dimensions: Input your quilt's Length and Width in inches.
- Set Binding Width: Enter the width of your binding strips (typically 2.25–2.5 inches).
- Set Fabric Width: Enter the usable width of your binding fabric (standard quilting cotton is 42 inches).
- Calculate: Click the Calculate Binding button.
Results explained:
- Total Binding Length: The perimeter of your quilt plus 10 inches for mitered corners and joining strips.
- Number of Strips Needed: How many strips to cut from your fabric (rounded up).
- Fabric Yardage Required: Total yards of fabric needed (strips × binding width ÷ 36).
Tip: If any input shows a red border, enter a positive number and recalculate.
