How to use this tool?

This calculator estimates the weight of a pipe based on its dimensions and material density. All inputs use Imperial units (inches and feet).

  1. Enter Outer Diameter – The pipe’s outside diameter in inches.
  2. Enter Wall Thickness – The pipe wall thickness in inches.
  3. Enter Length – The pipe length in feet.
  4. Select Material – Choose a preset material (Steel, Aluminum, Copper, PVC) or select “Custom” to enter your own density in lb/in³.
  5. Click “Calculate Weight” – The result appears in pounds (lb) below, along with the formula and intermediate values (inner diameter, cross-sectional area, volume).

Note: Wall thickness must be less than half the outer diameter (so inner diameter is positive). All inputs must be positive numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

The weight is calculated using the formula: Weight = (π/4) × (OD² - ID²) × Length × Density, where OD is outer diameter, ID is inner diameter (OD - 2×wall thickness), length is in inches, and density is in lb/in³.

The calculator includes preset densities for steel, aluminum, copper, and PVC. You can also enter a custom density for any other material.

Currently, the calculator uses inches for dimensions and feet for length. The result is in pounds. Ensure you convert your measurements accordingly.
