How to use this tool?
The Money Calculator totals the value of coins and bills you enter. It also optionally shows the minimum number of each denomination needed to reach a target amount.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Enter quantities for each coin and bill type (e.g., 5 for five $1 bills). All fields default to 0.
- Optional: Enter a Target Amount in dollars (e.g., 50.00) to see the optimal breakdown of coins/bills to reach that total.
- Click Calculate to see:
- Total Amount – the sum of all entered money.
- Formula breakdown – shows the calculation used.
- Target breakdown (if a target was entered) – lists the fewest coins/bills needed to make that amount.
- Click Clear to reset all fields and results.
Important Notes
- All coin and bill fields accept only non-negative whole numbers (integers).
- The target amount can include cents (e.g., 50.25) and must be non-negative.
- The target breakdown uses standard U.S. denominations and gives the minimum number of each to reach the target (greedy algorithm).

Frequently Asked Questions
Simply enter the number of each coin and bill denomination you have, and the calculator will compute the total value. Optionally, enter a target amount to see the fewest denominations needed to make that amount.
This calculator is designed for US denominations (cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollar coins, and $1 to $100 bills). For other currencies, you may need to adjust the values manually.
If you enter a target amount, the calculator will show the minimal number of each denomination needed to reach that amount, using the greedy algorithm (largest denominations first).
