How to Use the Loam Calculator

This calculator estimates the volume of loam (or any material) needed for a rectangular or circular area, given in cubic yards.

  1. Enter Dimensions: Fill in the Length, Width (for rectangular shapes), and Depth (in feet, meters, or yards). For a circular shape, Length acts as the radius.
  2. Select Unit: Choose the unit for your measurements: Feet, Meters, or Yards.
  3. Choose Shape: Pick Rectangular (length × width) or Circular (π × radius²).
  4. Calculate: Click the Calculate button. The result shows the volume in cubic yards (yd³) along with the area and volume in your chosen unit.

Note: All inputs must be positive numbers. Depth is always in the same unit as length/width. The final output is always in cubic yards for practical ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Loam is a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay, often considered ideal for gardening due to its good drainage and nutrient retention.

Measure the length and width of the area in feet, meters, or yards. For circular areas, measure the radius.

Depth determines how much loam you need. A typical depth for garden beds is 6-12 inches (0.5-1 ft).
