How to Use the Landscape Calculator
This calculator estimates the volume, weight, and cost of landscaping materials (topsoil, mulch, gravel, sand, or compost) for a rectangular area. All measurements are in imperial units (feet, inches, pounds, tons, cubic yards).
- Enter Area Dimensions: Input the Length and Width of the area in feet.
- Set Depth: Enter the desired depth of material in inches.
- Choose Material: Select the material type from the dropdown (e.g., Gravel, Mulch).
- Input Price: Enter the cost per cubic yard (or per ton, depending on supplier) in dollars.
- Calculate: Click the Calculate button.
Results show:
- Volume in cubic yards and cubic feet.
- Weight in pounds and tons (based on material density).
- Total Cost based on volume and price.
A detailed formula breakdown is provided below the results for transparency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Measure the length and width of the area in feet. For irregular shapes, break it into rectangles and calculate each separately, then sum the results.
A typical depth for mulch is 2-4 inches. For flower beds, 2-3 inches is common; for pathways, 3-4 inches. Adjust based on your needs.
Different materials have different densities. For example, gravel is denser than mulch, so the same volume of gravel weighs more. The calculator uses average densities for estimation.
