How to use this tool?
This calculator determines the required force per gas strut (in Newtons) to lift a lid or hatch. All inputs must be in metric units (kg, mm, degrees).
- Enter Lid Weight (kg) – the mass of the lid.
- Enter Lid Length (mm) – the distance from the hinge to the far edge of the lid.
- Enter Mount Distance (mm) – the distance from the hinge to the strut mounting point on the lid.
- Enter Strut Angle (0–90°) – the angle of the strut relative to the lid when closed.
- Enter Number of Struts – how many struts will be used (at least 1).
- Enter Safety Factor – a multiplier for safety (default 1.5, must be ≥ 1).
- Click Calculate – the result shows the force per strut in Newtons (N).
Formula: F = (m × g × L/2) / (n × d × sin(θ)) × SF
Where: m = lid weight, g = 9.81 m/s², L = lid length, n = number of struts, d = mount distance, θ = strut angle, SF = safety factor.

Frequently Asked Questions
A gas strut is a device that uses compressed gas to provide controlled lifting and damping force, commonly used for lids, hatches, and doors.
The force is calculated based on lid weight, dimensions, mounting position, strut angle, number of struts, and a safety factor using the formula: F = (m * g * L/2) / (n * d * sin(θ)) * SF.
Weight in kilograms, lengths in millimeters, angle in degrees, and force in Newtons (N).
