How to use this tool?

This calculator estimates your dog's daily calorie needs using the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, adjusted for activity, body condition, and neuter status.

  1. Enter Weight (kg): Input your dog's weight in kilograms. Use metric units only.
  2. Select Activity Level: Choose the option that best matches your dog's daily exercise:
    • Sedentary – mostly indoors
    • Moderate – daily walks (default)
    • Active – high exercise
    • Very Active – working dog
  3. Select Body Condition: Choose Underweight, Ideal, or Overweight to adjust calories up or down by 20%.
  4. Indicate Neuter Status: Select Yes if spayed/neutered (reduces needs by 10%), otherwise No.
  5. Click "Calculate Daily Calories": The result shows estimated kcal/day with a brief explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

RER stands for Resting Energy Requirement, the number of calories a dog needs at rest. It is calculated as 70 * (weight in kg)^0.75.

Sedentary: mostly indoors with minimal exercise. Moderate: daily walks. Active: high exercise or play. Very Active: working dogs or intense activity.

Neutered/spayed dogs often have a 10% lower calorie requirement due to metabolic changes.
