How to use this tool?
This calculator estimates the number of possible words in the NYT Spelling Bee given a required key letter and six other letters.
- Enter the Key Letter – Type a single letter (A–Z) into the Key Letter field. This letter must appear in every word.
- Enter the Other Letters – Type exactly six letters (A–Z) into the Other Letters field. Do not include the key letter here.
- Click "Calculate" – The calculator will validate your inputs and show an estimated word count.
- Read the Result – The Possible words (est.) number is the total distinct words that can be formed using the key letter and any non-empty subset of the other letters, assuming all letters are distinct and any arrangement is valid.
- Reset (optional) – Click Reset to clear all fields and start over.
Note: This is a mathematical estimate based on letter combinations and permutations. The actual number of valid words depends on the official NYT dictionary, so use this as a rough guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
It estimates the number of possible words that can be formed using the key letter (must be included) and the other six letters in the NYT Spelling Bee game.
The calculator counts all non-empty subsets of the six other letters, then for each subset calculates all permutations of the subset plus the key letter, summing over all word lengths from 2 to 7.
The actual number of valid words depends on the dictionary. This calculator assumes all letter combinations are valid words, which overestimates. It provides an upper bound.
