How to Use the Augmentin Pediatric Dose Calculator

  1. Enter Weight (kg): Input the child’s weight in kilograms (e.g., 20). Only metric units are accepted. Must be greater than 0 and ≤ 150 kg.
  2. Select Infection Type: Choose Mild/Moderate (e.g., otitis media) or Severe (e.g., pneumonia). This sets the daily dose: 45 mg/kg/day for mild, 90 mg/kg/day for severe.
  3. Choose Formulation: Pick the suspension strength (e.g., 125 mg/5 mL, 400 mg/5 mL). This determines the volume per dose.
  4. Calculate: Click “Calculate Dose”. The result shows the exact volume (mL) to administer every 12 hours, plus a full breakdown of the dose calculation.

Important: The calculator divides the total daily dose into two equal doses (q12h). Maximum daily doses are 1750 mg (mild) and 3000 mg (severe). Always verify with a healthcare professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dose is based on the child's weight in kilograms, the severity of the infection (mild/moderate vs severe), and the specific formulation of Augmentin suspension. Typically, the recommended dose is 45 mg/kg/day for mild infections and 90 mg/kg/day for severe infections, divided into two doses. The calculator then determines the volume of suspension to administer based on the concentration.

The calculator caps the daily dose at the maximum recommended amount (1750 mg for mild infections and 3000 mg for severe infections) to avoid overdosing. This ensures the dose stays within safe limits, especially for heavier children.

Different Augmentin suspensions have different concentrations of amoxicillin (e.g., 125 mg per 5 mL, 200 mg per 5 mL). The formulation determines the volume (in mL) needed to deliver the prescribed milligram dose. Using the correct formulation ensures accurate administration.
