How to Use the 8-Hour Shift Calculator

  1. Enter Shift Start Time – Use the time input (default 09:00). Format: HH:MM (24-hour).
  2. Set Break Duration – Enter total break time in minutes (e.g., 30 for a lunch break). Max 480 minutes (8 hours).
  3. Optional: Set Break Start Time – If left blank, the calculator automatically places the break at the midpoint (4 hours after start). Enter a specific time if needed.
  4. Click "Calculate" – Or press Enter on any input field.
  5. Read Results:
    • Shift End – The time your shift ends (start + 8 hours + break duration).
    • Total Paid Hours – 8 hours minus break duration (assumes break is unpaid). Minimum 0 hours.
    • Total Break Time – The break duration you entered.

Note: All times use 24-hour format. Break duration must be a non-negative number. The calculator assumes an 8-hour shift with unpaid breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add 8 hours to your start time, then add the total break duration (in minutes). For example, start at 9:00 AM with a 30-minute break gives an end time of 5:30 PM.

The calculator automatically sets the break at the midpoint of the shift (4 hours after start) for convenience.

This calculator assumes breaks are unpaid, so total paid hours = 8 hours minus break duration. Adjust if your breaks are paid.
