How to Use the Net Pay Calculator
This calculator estimates your net pay (take-home amount) per pay period after federal taxes, Social Security, Medicare, state tax, and deductions. Follow these steps:
- Enter Gross Pay – Input your gross earnings for one pay period (e.g., $5,000). Must be a positive number.
- Select Pay Frequency – Choose how often you get paid: Weekly, Biweekly, Semi-monthly, or Monthly.
- Choose Filing Status – Select Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Head of Household. This affects federal tax brackets.
- Enter State Tax Rate (%) – Input your state’s flat tax rate (e.g., 5 for 5%). Use 0 if no state tax. Must be between 0 and 100.
- Add Pre-tax Deductions – Enter amounts like 401(k) or HSA contributions per pay period (e.g., $200). These reduce taxable income.
- Add Post-tax Deductions – Enter amounts like Roth IRA contributions per pay period (e.g., $100). These are subtracted after taxes.
- Click “Calculate Net Pay” – The result shows your net pay per period and a full breakdown of taxes and deductions.
Note: All inputs are per pay period. The calculator uses 2025 simplified federal tax brackets and assumes a flat state tax rate. Social Security is capped at $176,100 annual income. Medicare includes an additional 0.9% tax for high earners.
