It estimates the number of months (or years and months) your savings will last if you withdraw a fixed amount each month and earn a fixed annual return on the remaining balance.
We use the formula for the number of periods until depletion, accounting for compound interest. If the annual return is 0%, it's simply balance divided by monthly withdrawal.
If the monthly withdrawal is less than or equal to the monthly earnings (balance times monthly return), the money will last indefinitely. The calculator will show an error message in that case.
