How to Use the German Grade Calculator
Convert your exam score into the German grading system (1.0 = best, 4.0 = pass, 5.0 = fail).
- Enter Maximum Possible Score – e.g., 100 for a test out of 100 points.
- Enter Achieved Score – your actual points earned (e.g., 85).
- Choose a Formula:
- Bavarian (standard) – assumes 0 is the minimum passing score.
- Modified (pass=4.0) – requires a Passing Score (e.g., 50). Scores below this get 5.0 (fail).
- Set Passing Score (only for Modified formula) – the minimum score to pass (e.g., 50).
- Click Calculate German Grade – the result shows your grade (e.g., 2.50) and the formula used.
Note: All inputs must be positive numbers. Achieved score cannot exceed the maximum. The grade is rounded to two decimals.

Frequently Asked Questions
The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (excellent) to 5.0 (fail), with 4.0 being the minimum passing grade. It is commonly used in German universities.
The Bavarian formula is: German Grade = 1 + 3 * (Max Score - Achieved Score) / (Max Score - Minimum Score). Typically minimum score is 0, but can be adjusted.
The modified formula uses a passing score instead of 0 as the minimum: German Grade = 1 + 3 * (Max Score - Achieved Score) / (Max Score - Passing Score). If achieved score is below passing, grade is 5.0.
