How to Use the FOIL Calculator

This calculator multiplies two binomials in the form (ax + b)(cx + d) and shows the expanded result step by step.

  1. Enter the coefficients: Fill in the four input fields:
    • a – coefficient of x in the first binomial
    • b – constant term in the first binomial
    • c – coefficient of x in the second binomial
    • d – constant term in the second binomial
    Example: For (2x + 3)(4x - 5), set a=2, b=3, c=4, d=-5.
  2. Click "Calculate": Press the blue button to compute the result.
  3. Read the result: The expanded polynomial (e.g., 8x² - 2x - 15) appears in green.
  4. Review the steps: Below the result, a list shows each FOIL step (First, Outer, Inner, Last) and the final combination.

All inputs accept decimals and negative numbers. If any field is empty or invalid, an error message will appear.
