How to Use the FERS Retirement Calculator

  1. Enter your High-3 Average Salary – Your highest average salary over any 3 consecutive years (in dollars).
  2. Enter your Years of Service – Total creditable federal service (can include half-years, e.g., 25.5).
  3. Enter your Age – Your current age (between 1 and 120).
  4. Enter your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) – Typically between 55 and 60 (check your specific MRA).
  5. Select Filing Status – Choose Single or Married (with survivor election). Married reduces the annuity by 5% for survivor benefits.
  6. Check the Supplement Eligibility box – If you meet the criteria (age ≥ MRA & service ≥ 30, or age ≥ 60 & service ≥ 20), the calculator will estimate the FERS Supplement.
  7. Click Calculate – Your estimated annual annuity and supplement (if eligible) will appear below.

Note: All inputs must be positive numbers. The calculator uses a 1% multiplier (or 1.1% if age ≥ 62 and service ≥ 20). Results are annual estimates; actual benefits may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

The basic formula is: High-3 Average Salary × Years of Creditable Service × 1% (or 1.1% if retiring at age 62 or later with 20+ years).

The FERS Supplement is an additional benefit for employees who retire before age 62 and are eligible for an immediate retirement. It approximates the Social Security benefit you earned while employed.

If you elect a survivor benefit for your spouse, your annuity is reduced by approximately 5% to provide a continuing annuity to your spouse after your death.
