How to use this tool?
This calculator helps you determine the number of steps, actual riser height, total run, and stringer length for a deck staircase. All measurements are in inches (imperial).
- Total Rise (inches): Enter the total vertical height from the ground to the top of the deck.
- Desired Riser Height (inches): Enter your preferred step height (typically between 4 and 7 inches). The calculator will adjust to keep risers uniform.
- Tread Depth (inches): Enter the depth of each step (usually 10–11 inches).
- Stringer Thickness (inches): Enter the thickness of the stringer board (e.g., 2 inches). This is for material selection and does not affect the length calculation.
- Click Calculate to see results: number of risers, actual riser height, number of treads, total run, and stringer length (hypotenuse).
Note: All values must be positive numbers. Riser height must be between 1 and 12 inches. The stringer length is computed using the Pythagorean theorem and does not include the stringer thickness.
