How to Use the Compost Calculator
This tool calculates the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio of your compost pile and tells you if it's balanced. Enter the weight of your materials in any consistent unit (kg or lbs).
- Enter Greens: Input the weight of nitrogen-rich materials (e.g., grass clippings, kitchen scraps). Must be 0 or greater.
- Enter Browns: Input the weight of carbon-rich materials (e.g., dry leaves, straw, wood chips). Must be 0 or greater.
- Click "Calculate": The calculator will validate your inputs and display the results below.
Understanding Results:
- C:N Ratio: Shows the calculated ratio (e.g., 25.0:1). If greens are 0, it shows "Infinite".
- Status: A badge indicating if the mix is "Ideal" (25-30:1), "Too much nitrogen", "Too much carbon", or slightly off.
- Recommendation: Tells you what to add (more greens or browns) to reach the ideal range.
Tip: Use the same unit (kg or lbs) for both inputs. The formula assumes greens have ~10:1 C:N and browns have ~30:1 C:N.

Frequently Asked Questions
The ideal C:N ratio is between 25:1 and 30:1. This ensures efficient decomposition and prevents odors.
Green materials are nitrogen-rich: grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and fresh plant trimmings.
Brown materials are carbon-rich: dry leaves, straw, wood chips, cardboard, and paper.
